The Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982), 46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises, as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial photos, transparencies and photos.

The library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection, administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or form of printed documents.

24nd issue (January-March 2007):
"Historic Libraries in Regional Greece; Their Establishment, Maintenance and Administration "

The 24th En Volo issue, first for 2007, features a special on "Historic Libraries in Regional Greece; Their Establishment, Maintenance and Administration", a topic of rather special interest and substantial tradition in the greater Magnesia area. The instigation behind the special was a summer conference on this topic, which was organized by D.I.K.I., and is currently to be established on a permanent basis. It is also hoped that the conference will constitute a reference point in matters of printed cultural heritage administration.

The special includes material on some of the most historic public libraries in regional Greece, as well as articles by prominent scientists of relevant academic fields and the challenges posed by new technologies in the administration of old and rare publications.

Additonally, the special was the motive behind the Municipal History Center's recent effort to begin registering all old publications in the possession of municipal and private organizations, in both Volos and the surrounding area. Although it was not feasible to publish the results of this effort on this particular issue, the effort continues and will continue to be one of the Municipal History Center's ongoing projects. For that matter, one of these organizations, the Thessalian Research Company (Eteria Thessalikon Erevnon), will be extensively presented in the next issue.

In terms of the magazine's permanent columns, the "Memento" column is relevant to the special, presenting "ex libris" of old publications from the collecion of professor N.I.Pantazopoulos, which was recently donated to the Municipal History Center. The "Personalities" Column pays tribute to two renowned locals, the communist leader and member of the national resistance movement Miltiadis Porfirogenis, from the suburb of Agria, and the historian Filippos Iliou, as he presented the historical figure of the former for the Municipality of Volos, in December 1995. As always, the issue is completed by the social calendar which includes all the important events for the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007.
