The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
The
Municipal Center for Historιcal Research and Documentation
(DIKI) is a purely municipal enterprise. It was established
in 1991 as a Volos' s Municipality initiative for the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of documents of
every kind and form, concerning the history of Volos and its
greater area.
Its
responsibilities are:
The
operation of the historical archive of the city, which includes
the municipal archive and various private archives, which
connected directly or indirectly to Volos and its greater
area. The
scientific supervision and the co-ordination of the Volos
Municipality's libraries aiming at their unified organization
of the libraries together with boosting common initiatives
in the promotion of books and reading. The
operation of the documentation department, which collects,
administrates and processes the resources, which are connected
to the development of the city and its area. The
promotion of the city's history and physiognomy and the
public announcement of contemporary scientific data, language
and art, with events, educational programs and publications.
The scientific supervision and administration of municipal
collections and museums, which touch upon the history of
the city. The
realization of research programs and the encouragement to
researchers and research teams from Greece and abroad for
the preparation of studies centred upon Volos and its area.
It's evident that the
collaboration and the participation of the collective bodies
and the inhabitants of the city and the Greek area on the
formulation of proposals on the development and support
of new initiatives are crucial factors of achievement of
DIKI's goals.
