Volos
Municipality Libraries Network
The libraries currently in operation within the Municipality
of Volos area belong to private law corporate bodies (purely
municipal enterprises) with the purpose to reinforce, but
also serve its activities.
Specifically, libraries operate:
At the Municipal Center for History. It began with the
Volos Municipality old collections and local and historical
interest editions. Today it numbers 35.000 volumes of books,
about 500 titles of periodicals, as well as 4.000 filed
articles of mainly local interest. It also includes a mobile
library collection of literature books and knowledge books
for students.
At the Municipal Institute of Professional Status (DIEK).
The library operates in order to facilitate the students
of DIEK and it includes about 1000 titles, mainly books
of art.
The Volos Municipality Artistic Organization supervises
the libraries housed at:
At the Children hangout (1986). It is a lending library
numbering about 5.500 titles of books, it appeals to children
and youths, while it possesses many titles of books for
older ages. Many events are held for book promotion (presentation
of authors, theatrical games, educational programs etc).
At the Youth Center "Diavlos". It numbers about
3.700 titles, it is a lending library and it appeals to
ages over 15.
At the four youth centers of the Municipality. They possess
about 1.000 not classified titles of books in total and
they are lending libraries. They do not occupy private space
in the buildings or personnel for their operations.
At the Municipal Conservatory. This library operates for
the facility of the Conservatory students too.
The libraries supervised by the Volos Municipal Organization
of Health and Social Matters are housed:
At the Center for Creative Activities of Neapolis. It includes
4000 titles of books for children and youths.
At the Boarding Center for Individuals with Special Needs,
in the Palea District. It includes 800 titles relevant to
this subject.
At the Center for Professional Support of DEOV (Volos Municipal
Educational Organization). It includes books and works of
employment market research.
The Municipality of Volos plans to re-operate the theatrical
library of DI.PE.THE (Municipal Regional Theatre) at the
Municipal Theatre venue with the purpose in order to collect
material for the theatre of the area as well as of the rest
of Greece, to support the performances of DI.PE.THE of Volos,
to develop a theatrical education and for the facility of
the Volos Drama School students.
The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
